Tell us about your internship! [Madilyn]
From June through early September, I worked as a Student Design Trainee III (aka. Intern) with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency - SFMTA, for short. At SFMTA, I worked on the Complete Streets Team under Transportation Planning within the Sustainable Streets Division. I worked on a handful of projects related to the connection between different mode types (i.e., walking, biking, transit, etc.). A few examples of projects I worked on include: building out a shapefile for GIS mapping consisting of directional turn-movement data from 2006-2017 for manually collected bicycle count data, developing flyers and informational graphics in Adobe software for the Bayview Community Based Transportation Plan, and presenting on findings from a series of stakeholder interviews to a Citizen Advisory Committee and a Technical Advisory Committee.
My supervisor was an alum of Cal Poly’s Masters of City and Regional Planning and Transportation Engineering duel degree program, which made the summer extra special.
The internship program at SFMTA allowed me to connect with over 40 other interns working in different areas of transportation planning, including Scooter permitting, Muni operations and transit accessibility. Each Friday consisted of Seminars and Field Trips and lots of intern bonding. If you’re in any way interested in transportation planning, I strongly recommend you apply to their summer program!
